This Week in the Missouri Senate for July 29, 2011: Disaster Subcommittees

This Week in the Missouri Senate reviews the latest with the Senate Interim Committee on Natural Disaster Recovery. Both the Subcommittee on Emergency Response and the Subcommittee on Insurance Response held hearings this week. The third subcommittee, the Subcommittee on Fiscal Response, will meet next month. July Marks Final Month for Action on Measures Passed by General Assembly

JEFFERSON CITY - July 14 was the final day the governor could act on legislation delivered to him by members of the Senate and House of Representatives. If no action was taken on legislation, by either receiving his signature or a veto, then the legislation is enacted into law on its effective date.

More than 130 measures received the governor’s written approval (four will take effect without receiving gubernatorial action), and 15 received his veto, including one line-item veto in House Bill 10 and a measure -later overridden by the General Assembly -changing the composition of congressional districts based on the 2010 census. The bills noted in this column are listed according to the date the legislation received the governor’s approval.

Capitol Dialogue for July 2011

Host Bob Priddy from Missourinet, along with several lawmakers, appear on the July edition of Capitol Dialogue to discuss education in Missouri. Senator David Pearce, R-Warrensburg; Sen. Robin Wright-Jones, D-St. Louis, and Rep. Joe Aull, D-Marshall, review how education is doing in the current economic climate in Missouri, and what the future could hold. A plan to update the education funding formula was debated during the regular legislative session this year.

This Week in the Missouri Senate for July 1, 2011: New Fiscal Year Begins

This Week in the Missouri Senate reviews the process of creating Missouri’s budget for Fiscal Year 2012, which begins today (7/1). The governor has withheld more than $172 million from the $23.2 billion budget, including cuts to higher education and school transportation funding.
